O Canada! We’re so excited to be celebrating 150 years of you! In honour of our country’s 150th birthday, I thought it would be fun to work on some Canada Day crafts, so off I went to my crafty stash. Just a few minutes later, I had whipped up a fun and simple little piece of string art in the form of Canada’s emblem: the maple leaf. Let me show you how I created this jaunty addition to my Canada Day decor.

I’m also one of the token Canadians in our Spectacular Summer Blog Hop group, so now – after me posting all those Fourth of July ideas – it’s their turn to post something about Canada Day! 😉

Canada Day Crafts: Maple Leaf String Art

This craft could so easily be switched up for any holiday: a star for the Fourth of July, a pine tree for Christmas, the Star of David for Hanukkah, a heart for Valentine’s Day. Plus, it is an incredibly easy-to-make project, perfect for involving kids!

Materials:

Three colours of embroidery floss (I used three shades of red)

Pushpins or finishing nails

Hammer

Maple leaf template (I traced the one from the Canadian flag!)

Pencil

Wood plaque

Optional: Craft paint and brush

Directions:

  1. Print or trace your template. Cut it out and place it on the wood plaque. For every point in the shape (or in the case of a rounder template, following the curve), mark a light dot with the pencil. DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  2. On top of each dot, place a pushpin or lightly hammer in a finishing nail. I used the pushpins to make this a more kid-friendly craft, and to add a bit of white (since Canada’s flag is red and white). DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day CraftsDIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  3. Tie the embroidery thread to three points of your design. DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  4. Begin by “tracing” the outline of your leaf, looping the thread around each pin. Stop when you get to the next colour. DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  5. Repeat step #4 with all colours and then begin to overlap your threads until each thread is back to its starting position. DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  6. Fill in the inside of the design by weaving the threads across the leaf, until you have your desired design. DIY Canada Day Maple Leaf String Art | Canada Day Crafts
  7. Optional: paint the edge of your wood plaque and allow it to dry before hanging.
