Music nerd jokes for the WIN!
Sorry that it’s been radio silence around here lately. I’ve been so, so busy with rehearsals and concerts (’tis the season) that I’ve barely had time to breathe, let alone post. Today my choir is performing at a big celtic event in Montreal, but I really wanted to get something up here, if only to prove that I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.
I’ve been making a concerted effort to take photos of our garden each week. I’m hoping to create a sort of digital garden yearbook, to chronicle its seasonal changes. About a month ago, I posted our garden plans for 2015, so if you’d like to see where I’m hoping to go with it this year, you should check out that post.
This is where we started:
There was a lot of raking of leaves happening around here lately. NINE bags of garden refuse later, things began to perk up.
The crocuses were the first flowers to bloom in the garden this year. They are so lovely and delicate – what a joy!
Things were a little slower to come up in the back yard, because it doesn’t get as many hours of direct sunlight every day. But the daffodils are blooming now!
The front now looks like this:
There are so many things to do this year. Our lawn is somewhat patchy, so we’re hoping to rectify that problem soon. I want to put down black mulch this year. I did red last year, and in the front it is completely ruined because I didn’t know you needed to put newspaper beneath it… So the weeds grew anyway and I’ve ended up raking most of it off. I’ve also decided that I don’t like the look of red mulch. #firstworldproblems
I am mightily surprised that ALL the plants and bulbs I planted last fall are shooting up this spring. Winter was cruel and long this year, so I really didn’t think they’d survive. I guess they are hardier folk than I thought! The peonies especially I never thought would make it. They came by way of friends who were downsizing, so they were first transplanted in the fall of 2013 (to my parents’ garden, because we didn’t have the keys to the house yet), and then AGAIN this fall. Those things are incredible! The forsythia is a cutting from my parents’ garden – it looks kinda patchy right now, but it’ll fill out quickly.
These tulips are just coming out. So delightful!
Last year I received this rhubarb as a gift from some friends – it, too, has survived the winter and is shooting up like crazy! I love that so many of our plants have a story behind them.
Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous: warm, sunny, perfect! I spent a happy hour cruising the garden centre, where I had fun taking photos of the flowers available. You know that I have a big thing for dahlias, so I couldn’t resist snapping some pics of these beautiful blooms:
This is the varietal of ornamental grass that I’m hoping to plant in our back yard. Erick says this photo looks like a little « Blue Fescue » graveyard…
And yes, I did come home with MUCH bounty, but you’ll have a wait a bit to see exactly what made it into my cart. Have a good weekend!
