If you read the post about my 2015 Reader Survey, you know that I also gave a little peek at the rocking chair makeover I was working on. Don’t remember? (Well maybe you should go have and have a look at that… And take the survey while you’re at it… *cough*)
To re-cap, this wicker rocking chair belonged to my grandmother, and is 60+ years old. It has seen some wear and tear over the years (including at least five paint jobs that I could see), but it is still in pretty good shape.
When last we left off, the chair looked like this:
It was pretty grimy from years of hanging out in my parents’ garage. (Literally hanging out: there are at least five chairs hanging on the back wall.)
So I scrubbed…
And I sprayed…
And I rocked this makeover!
She looks SO much better than before! I’m so glad that with just a few cans of spray paint and some elbow grease, this beauty can grace our home again.
If you are going to do a similar makeover, you will need:
- An old toothbrush or nailbrush – this helps to get the grime out from in between the wicker!
- Soap & water for washing
- 200 grit sandpaper
- 2-3 cans of semi-gloss or high-gloss Rust-oleum spray paint (or similar brand)
- A safety mask – never a bad idea when sanding or working with spray paint! And besides, they look pretty fetching!
Safety first! Artistic sun flare second!
The directions are simple:
- Clean up the chair and make sure to get off all residue and dirt.
- Give surfaces a light sanding, particularly where the wicker is splintering or the original paint job is uneven.
- Wash down the chair with water and soap, then rinse really well. Any leftover dust will affect the quality of your paint job!
- In a well-ventilated area (I did mine outside in our driveway), spray paint the chair. Begin with a light but even coat, keeping the can moving across the chair as you spray.
- When your first coat is dry (in about 20 minutes), apply a second, even layer.
- If needed, apply a third coat of paint.
- Let the paint completely cure (for at least a day or two) before putting on a cushion!

Looks great! I’m not very good at feeling like I can tackle things like this- a toothbrush is a great idea.
It worked really well and I’d definitely use it again! Thanks for reading!
What a beautiful chair! I love seeing old things getting the little love they need to shine bright again!
Thanks, Lorna! I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
Wow! What a beauty! It looks so nice and new. Great DIY 🙂
Thanks, Lara!
Your chair looks so inviting now. I just painted an old child’s rocking chair for our grandson (for his first birthday). I don’t enjoy painting much, but the results were well worth it.
Yeah, it can be a pain to paint – spraying made it more palatable – Trying to get into all that wicker with a brush would be been next to impossible! Hope your grandson loves his chair!
You did a great job refurbishing this beautiful chair and I love the pop of color you chose in the cushion. So pretty. Thank you for sharing at Share It One More Time. Cathy
Thanks, Cathy! The cushion is actually borrowed from my deck chairs… I still need to to find/make one that is the right size, but I agree that the coral is great against the white!
The makeover turned out great! I love the colour you chose for the cushion as well 🙂 x
Hahaha thanks Jess! I laugh because I “borrowed” that cushion from one of my dining chairs… I guess I have to kind or make something else in coral!
Great job—I love the bold coral color aginst the stark white!
Thank you!
Lovely! Reminds me of peace and beauty and a great big front porch!
I think our deck is my favourite “room” in the house, for just that reason.
Very nice upcycle!
I love a good makeover! Looks SO great after a bit of TLC 🙂
Thank you!
Thanks so much!
All that scrubbing must have taken forever. The finished product looks fabulous though, well worth the effort! Amazing Makeover !
You know, it wasn’t too bad this time around. Not nearly as bad as scraping down those chairs we worked on!
What a beautiful job! I love white wicker; it’s so classic. Thanks for sharing your post at Together on Tuesdays!!!
Thanks, Lisa! I love a crisp white for outdoor furniture: it contrasts with all the green.
Love making something old- new again! We spray painted an old cabinet from mustard yellow to deep brown as a perfect cable box hutch…whala! Thanks for sharing 🙂
