Quick Query! Friday seems like a good time to an Quick Query! Friday seems like a good time to answer a question that often comes up: what’s the best way to choose your wedding colour palette? First of all, you should be approaching colour as exactly that: a palette. Floral designers work much the way visual artists mix paints to create the shades, tones, and hues required to bring a painting to life. So if you tell us “burgundy and blush”, we won’t only be creating your florals around only those two colours. To get florals that are natural and artful, we’re going to work within a variety of tones in the spectrum of those colours. The second thing to consider is that contrast is a good thing. Maybe it is as simple as an all-neutral-and-green palette accented by a rich navy or a modern black. Or perhaps it is the ever-popular burgundy and blush, but with some caramel and brown tones for depth (look back 1 post in my feed to see exactly this!). Contrast doesn’t always need to be hit-you-in-the-face to work. Lastly, if you are wanting to add colour to your event that doesn’t really occur in nature, like teal for example, it is best used in decor elements such as stationery, linens, or accessories. Trying to incorporate it into your florals is going to feel forced and - dare I say it? - dated. “How do I get the most out of my wedding floral “How do I get the most out of my wedding floral budget?” Allow your larger ceremony pieces to make a reappearance at the reception! I love it when we can allow a gorgeous piece to be enjoyed for the entirety of an event. For N&M’s wedding, we created two arching floral columns that served as a stunning focal point for their lake-front ceremony. For the reception, we moved them into the dinner space to frame the sweetheart table. Now, not every design can be moved easily. Having your ceremony and reception in the same location opens up a lot more possibilities, as does trusting your floral designer to suggest a look that is moveable between sites! Quick Query! What’s the deal with candles? Ho Quick Query! What’s the deal with candles? How many do you need? Is it better to rent or buy? How do you get that Pinterest glow? 1 - Candles are - in my opinion - non-negotiable. And you ALWAYS need more of them than you think. That’s where a designer can really help! 2 - The eye likes to see things in odd numbers and groupings. Different sizes, textures, and styles makes for a more interesting tablescape. 3 - If you care about the sustainability of your wedding or event (and I think you should), renting your candles and holders is the way to go. It’s also less stressful, and you get access to a wider and more interesting variety of styles.
